Remember all He has done
We all go through difficult periods in our lives, some more than others. These difficulties can take many forms. Relationships, situations with our children, finances, health problems, employment/lack of employment, even church relationships. We don’t have a choice about which problems come into our lives, (unless we have brought things upon ourselves!!) but we do have a choice about how we handle them.
Focusing on our problems and dwelling on them can lead to depression and compound the problem. Scripture has some good advice. “Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles and the judgments he pronounced.” Psalm 105:1-5
There are a number of things listed in those few verses. One stands out to me. Remember!! Remember the wonders he has done and his miracles. It helps to start remembering all the Lord has brought you through and the provision he has given you in the past. If it is helpful, sit down and make a list. In the book of Deuteronomy the Lord tells Israel thirteen times that they are to remember the various things he brought them through.
Psa, 77:11 says “I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will meditate on all your works and consider all your mighty deeds.”
I am writing an account of things the Lord has done in my life. I want my children and grandchildren to know of the provision that we experienced from the hand of the Lord and how he brought us through various situations, many times miraculously. Psa. 78:2 “We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord.”
The verses in Psalm 105 have some other good advice. Give thanks to the Lord. Call on His name. Sing to him. Glory in his holy name. Rejoice. Look to the Lord. Seek his face. By the time we work though all these our perspective on our situation will change.
There is an old hymn that has been sung in churches since I was a little girl, and probably before that. “Count your Blessings.”
When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed.
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost.
Count your many blessings, name them one by one.
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.
Count your blessings, name them one by one.
Count your blessings, see what God has done.
Count your blessings, name them one by one.
Count your many blessings, see what God has done.
It’s good to spend some time remembering all that God has done in your life.
