Life Style Worship

It is Sunday morning at 10:30am and worship music is pumping through the speakers at church. People are smiling as they sing and clap to the words that are on the screens at the front of the gathering. Some are swaying to the music others are lifting their hands in celebration. The energy and excitement builds with each new song and finally climaxes as someone takes the stage and rallies the crowd before they all sing the last verse one more time. Right before all the smiling people take a seat they turn around to slap each other a high five and think to themselves, "wow what great worship this was".

It is at that very moment that the Holy Spirit reminds you of your week. Conversations that you had with people, jokes that you entertained, activities you partook in, thoughts that filled your mind; anger, lust, pride and even shows that you watched. As this is taking place you hear the Holy Spirit ask, "did you worship me this week?"

Romans 12:1-2 says, "I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect". Here we see that true spiritual worship is not in the pomp and circumstance but rather in the way we live our lives. Now, there is nothing wrong with the corporate setting where we all worship God together with song and music, you can definitely feel His presence in those moments. The point though is that too often times we substitute a life style of worship for Sunday morning corporate singing. One of the very things that separates us from the rest of the world is the way we live our lives which is true worship to God.

Paul in these two brief but powerful scriptures essentially says this. True worship is seen in your life style; the way you interact with people, the conversations you have, the jokes you entertain, the thoughts that fill your head, etc. He then goes on to say that because true worship is seen through our life style do not be conformed to the rest of the world or in other words do not participate in the same activities as every one else. Let your life style show who you are worshipping. God cares more about the content of our character and the way we live our life than he does about the songs we are singing on Sunday morning.

Not too many people from your work or community see you on a Sunday morning during corporate worship and if they did, not too many of them would probably care. The type of worship that impacts people the most is when they see your life style worshiping God. I think we should all take a moment today and really examine ourselves and see if our life style worships God.
