You Are His Treasured Possession

In Deuteronomy 14 Moses speaks to the Israelites and gives them some instructions. “You are the children of the Lord your God.” “You are to be his treasured possession.” Those are awesome words and I believe they apply to us as Christ followers also. Wow!! God’s treasured possession. If you have a treasured possession you give it special care. You make sure to protect it, keep it safe, give thought to its well being. I believe God does all of that for us. We are His children and His treasured possession.

Isaiah 41:13 echoes this message. “I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.” I know those things were said about Israel, but again I believe they apply to us. How awesome to have a God who holds our hand and helps us! There are times when I really feel the need of someone to hold my hand.

These are not the only verses in the Bible to give this message. Mal. 3:17 says, “They will be mine, says the Lord Almighty, in the day when I make up my treasured possession.” Who are these named as a treasured possession? Verse 16 gives us the answer. Those who feared the Lord and talked with each other. Eph. 1:18 (KJV) says that His inheritance is in the saints. We are God’s inheritance. We can be sure He is looking well after his inheritance.

If we really grasp hold of this I think it will affect the way we live. If we are so precious to God, and he refers to us as His treasured possession, shouldn't we think twice about what we allow in our lives? About the things we do? Where we go? How we spend our time? About people who we allow to influence our lives? About what we read and the television and movies we watch? Psalm 101 says “I will set before my eyes no vile thing.” And David didn’t even have TV and movies to watch!!! I don’t know if there was such a thing as pornography back in David’s time, but there certainly wasn’t any Internet porn. How much more do we need to guard our eyes and not allow any vile thing to invade our hearts and minds. The things we see enter into our innermost being and influence us in many ways. They can crop up in our minds when we least expect them to and influence the meditation of our hearts.

I don’t know about you, but as God’s treasured possession I want to please Him and be the kind of inheritance He will be proud of. “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.” Psalm 19:14
