Joy - Daily Devotional June 5th, 2010

Bible Reading - Deuteronomy 9, Psalm 92-93, Isaiah 37, Revelation 7

Joy

Joy is, "the emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying; keen pleasure; elation."

The Deceleration of Independence states;

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”.

Notice that we have the rights of life and liberty but not of joy or happiness. Happiness in this case is something that we can pursue but their is not guarantee that we will get it.

People look for Joy in all kinds of places, relationships, money, family, spirituality, religion and the list goes on and on. We may find temporary fulfillment and joy in many of these things but eventually it will fade. Psalm 92:1-4 reads, "It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night, to the music of the lute and the harp, to the melody of the lyre. For you, O LORD, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy".

This weekend at Urban we are staring a new series, Dr. PHILippians in which we will be going through the book of Philippians. As we go through this book we will quickly discover that the over all theme is JOY. We will also discover as the writer of Psalm 92 did that true joy does not come from any of the things we mentioned before but rather in the Lord Jesus Christ, His work and His people. The Lord is who brings us true joy and when we do His work and walk in obedience to Him, true Joy is fulfilled.

Join us this month as we discover in the book of Philippians how to have true joy, because all of us could use some help every now and then.
