How Great Is His Love

Just a few days ago I was reading Psalm 103 and was impressed with verses 11 and 12. “For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” That same thought of his great love for us is repeated in Psalm 108:4 in today’s Bible reading. “For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies.”

Do we stop to consider exactly what this is saying? Do we consider how high the heavens are above the earth? Astronauts have gotten a little view of the vastness of the heavens as they have stepped on the moon and now in the International Space Station. We can read articles about the Hubble telescope and see pictures of the enormous amount of space that is out there. In fact scientists have not been able to find that it ever ends. There are galaxies after galaxy, seemingly without end.

God uses this to compare with his love for us. I for one cannot comprehend that. I just know that in a moment of need when I read that his love for me was as high as the heavens are above the earth that it brought comfort to my heart. I know that I do not totally grasp the vastness of God’s love for me but what I do grasp is comforting and wonderful. I think sometimes we repeat the words, “God loves us” without really understanding how awesome that is.

My own hand laid the foundation of the earth and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I summon them they all stand up together.” Isaiah 48:13. When I think about the awesome power of God that formed this earth and universe, and then think that he is mindful of ME and loves ME it is almost overwhelming and totally mind boggling. How is it that God, who has such awesome knowledge and power wants to have a relationship with me? It makes me feel so very humble. It also makes me feel safe. The God who loves me so much is only going to allow what is good for me to come into my life whether I understand it or not.

What do we do with this knowledge? As I contemplate this, it makes me want to be sure to live a life that is honoring to the God who loves me so much.

God is good all the time,
Naomi Brinkman
