Eternity In Our Hearts
When I was growing up in church (years and years ago!!!!) we heard a lot of sermons about heaven and about the things the Lord was preparing for those who love him, but in the last 10-20 years not a lot has been said about heaven; at least not in the churches I have attended. We used to sing a lot of songs about heaven, but not so much any more.
Psalm 116:15 says “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” I take this to mean that it is not a light thing when the Lord calls one of his servants home. It is a special thing to him. Jesus said he was going to prepare a place for us, that where He is we may be also. He said that if we believe in him we would never die but have eternal life.
Revelation 22: 1-5 gives a little description of some of the things that await us in heaven. A river of the water of life flowing from the throne of God. The tee of life bearing 12 crops of fruit every month. The leaves of the tree for the healing of nations. No more curse. (The earth was cursed when Adam and Eve fell.) The throne of God and the Lamb in the city. We will see the face of God. There are other portions of Scripture that give us a little more insight.
I Cor. 2:9-10 says “No eye has seen, nor ear heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.” I think the Lord lets us know in our spirits that there is more than we can comprehend. There have been times when I have viewed the amazing creation of God and marveled at what He has made, and yet there was a yearning in my heart for something I didn’t quite know what. I think it’s because we have eternity in our hearts and we can’t quite grasp with our natural minds what that exactly will be.
I’m looking forward to seeing my husband again one day, seeing my parents, my grandparents and the paternal grandmother I never met who died on her way to a midweek prayer meeting, and special friends we have made throughout the years. I’m looking forward to seeing Jesus. But it’s like the song says, “I can only imagine.”
Whether we live to see the second coming of the Lord or whether we are one of the saints that he takes home in death, one thing I know, whatever awaits us is super special. “Amen. Come Lord Jesus.” Rev 22:20b

Naomi, I enjoyed your post. I think that what you are saying is really true. We might not understand heaven with out natural mindset but we maybe ponder on it a little more often than we the church do now. One of my favorite things to do sometimes in my time with the Lord is put on some of the older hymns that do sing about heaven and imagine it. It's like Paul talked about we wish to be with the Father but at the same time we know that it is for the benefit of other people that we stay here, but it's good to remember what we are striving here on earth for from time to time.
