The Servant
At the very beginning of Romans 16 Paul makes mention of Phoebe. He introduces her as a servant of the church and gives instruction as to how she should be treated. In the gospels Jesus talks of serving and the servant many times.
Matthew 20:27-28 "And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave- just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."
Luke 22:27 "For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves."
Matthew 23:11 "But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant."
These scriptures show us that Christ came to serve and that the greatest in the kingdom of God are the servants. As Christians we are called to live as Christ, we are called to serve.
In Romans we see that Paul does not stop at describing Pheobe as a servant. By telling them to treat her worthy of a saint, he is telling them she is one of the holy ones. He goes on from there and says that she has been a patron of many. Patron according to the Strongs Concordance, means a woman set over others, a female guardian, protectress, caring for the affairs of others and aiding them with her resources. So we see this servant is holy and one who cares for and aids others with resources.
I have to ask myself, how do people describe me? Am I truly living as Christ and being a servant of others? Today know that as you live a life of a servant you are living as Christ and great honor comes to the servant.
