Today's Bible Reading - Exodus 10, Luke 13, Job 28, 1 Corinthians 14
Not what you do but who you know
You may have heard it said before, "it's not what you know but who you know". As we look at Luke 13:25-27 today I believe by changing one word to the phrase the message of this passage is caught, "it's not what you do but who you know". It is so easy to get caught up in doing the things that Christians are supposed to do however, the Christian life is all about who we know. It is about having a relationship with Christ and out of that relationship flows the desire to do. Christ made it abundantly clear to us here as he said, "...You will stand outside knocking and pleading, 'Lord, open the door for us!' But he will reply, 'I don't know you or where you come from.' Then you will say, 'But we ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.' And he will reply, 'I tell you, I don't know you or where you come from..." (Luke 13:25-27) We also see this in Matthew 7:22-23, "One judgment day many will say to me, 'Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.' But I will reply, 'I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God's laws."
So today we must ask ourselves, "are we doing or are we knowing?" Are we going about doing or are we taking the time to know Him? Do we approach our days with the to do list mentality...read my Bible, check...prayed for 5 minutes, check...was kind to my co-worker, check. Or do we approach our days with a desire to read our Bible so that we can know Him more, to pray so that we can talk to Him more, to show kindness to others so that they may know Him?
Martha and Mary in Luke 10 display this for us. Martha was going about doing while Mary was taking the time to know. So, are you going to be a Martha or Mary today? Just remember, in the end it is all about who we know!
