Daily Bible Reading: 2 Samuel 24, Jeremiah 27, Mark 1

I know I need to do it. It’s really not that hard. I’ll do it tomorrow. How about this God, I’ll put it on my "to do" list for next week! I will even add it to my prayer list. I will make teeny-tiny baby steps towards it (that are very non-committal) and if people ask me I will say, "I’m workin’ on it!"

Sound familiar? I think deep down inside we all know what we need to do to step towards what God has called us to do. There is something inside of us that is just afraid to do it. The enemy would like to make us believe we are not ready, too young, too old, too poor, too short, too tall, too busy – not qualified! Isn’t there a small part of us that holds on too those lies as our excuses for not accomplishing what we know we should be?

If we count ourselves qualified that means we have to run the race. No more excuses. I have known many people who are dissatisfied with the way they are, but for every excuse you negate, they have another one in their back pocket! What a shame it is to see so many people disqualify themselves before they even get started!

In Mark 1:16-20 Jesus chose four disciples to follow him. They were fishermen, young and uneducated. They didn’t have impressive pedigree or prestige, and were certainly an unlikely choice to be the understudies to the Son of God. It says that at once they followed him. They didn’t make excuses or ask questions, they just dropped everything and followed him immediately. They could have argued that they were too young or just simple fishermen, but instead they decided not to pass up the opportunity to be used by God.

Don’t disqualify yourself when God has already qualified you! (Col. 1:12) Stop making excuses and do what you know he has called you to do!

Thanks for reading and responding,

Post a comment! Questions for reflection/response:
1. In what areas have you felt disqualified?
2. Can you think of some Biblical men or women that God called, but they still felt disqualified?

Tomorrow’s reading: 1 Kings 1, Jeremiah 28, Mark 2
