Stop Destroying The Lord's Anointed (2 Samuel 1:5-15)

Today's passage is a powerful one that shows once again the heart of David. A heart that was first and foremost loyal to God then to those he served and those who served with him. David was called a man after God's own heart and therefore a man we can learn alot from.

Many have taken this passage and have written books on it and taught the principle of staying under your spiritual and natural authority. The people that have taught this principle will say that David understood who the authority that God put in place was and that it would be wrong to bring any harm their way. Or it would be wrong to bring any accusation or any challenge etc. Although I agree with this principle they speak of, I also believe there is something else just as powerful being taught here.

It says in 2 Samuel 1:14, "How is it you were not afraid to put out your hand to destroy the Lord's anointed"? Looking at this story in context we see that Saul and his sons had fought in a battle against the Philistines. In this battle Saul was overtaken by the enemy and was wounded badly. When the man referenced in this story finds Saul, Saul asks him to kill him to put him out of his pain. Thus the comment David makes how come you were not scared out of your mind to kill the Lord's anointed.

Here is what we must understand from the Bible. In the Old Testament we see that God anointed individuals to lead His people. This is seen as He anointed people to be kings, judges and prophets to be His voice to the nation of Israel. At this time that person was King Saul. In the New Testament He anoints one to be the head and voice of his people and that one is Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:20 & 1 Peter 2:6). Jesus Christ then paved the way for all of us to be anointed by the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:11) thus making us all the Lord's anointed. Not anointed to be kings, judges and prophets like in the Old Testament but rather The Lord's anointed to live holy lives unto Him and proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ who has changed us (1 Peter 2:9).

Understanding now that we are The Lord's anointed, lets look again at the question David asked of this man in the passage we are looking at today, "How is it you were not afraid to put out your hand to destroy the Lord's anointed"? Let me rephrase this question. How is it that knowing you are The Lord's anointed you do things that destroy yourself and how is it that you are not scared out of your mind to do so? How is it that you do not have a problem thinking immoral thoughts that corrupt you? How is it that you do not have any fear as you sit there and watch those things on the screen that pollute your mind? How is it that you are not freaked out when you begin to engage in conversations that are not uplifting and encouraging? How is it that there is no fear when you do that secret sin behind closed doors? Because all these things my friend are destroying The Lord's anointed.

You are the Lord's anointed! What things are you allowing in your life today that are destroying you? We need to learn from this passage and take the things that are destroying us and put them to death. The principle is seen also in the New Testament in Matthew 5. So take some time today and look at your life, at the things you are allowing in it that are destroying The Lords anointed and then put those things to death.

Thanks for listening.
