Simplicity (Matthew 17:14-20)

Often times life seems to be so overwhelming and tasks seem to be tremendously difficult. Although life can have it's rough patches and trying seasons, it really does not have to be that complicated. I think we tend to make that which God wanted to be simplistic, difficult by adding our own ideas and agendas to it.

Also, we seem to look at circumstances and situations that arise in our life through defeated pessimistic eyes of fear rather than overcoming optimistic eyes of faith. When this happens we make mountains out of mole hills. I believe Jesus wants us to get back to simplicity and simplicity is found in simple faith.

Look at this passage in Matthew. The disciples were unable to see a little boy healed of his affliction. Jesus' response to their inability to see the boy healed may seem drastic at first but as he begins to explain His reasoning we see that life is really pretty simple. Jesus says, "For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, move from here to there, and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you."
Jesus uses one of the smallest of all seeds to say that if we have the simplest of faith we can overcome the greatest of obstacles. In other words, look how simple life really is. There is no problem or situation that is really that big or to difficult. Life truly is simple!

Life is simple but what happens is what I said earlier. We make mole hills into mountains. This morning we had to have our dryer worked on for the fourth time. Every time they work on it we cannot use it for about 24 hours. This morning was no different. Rather than looking at the situation with optimistic eyes of faith and thanking Jesus that the dryer may be finally fixed, we looked at it with pessimistic eyes of fear. We complained about how we could not dry cloths for yet another 24 hours (man how did people make it without dryers). We made a mountain out of a mole hill. This can be a real problem because through situations just like this we train ourselves to use our mustard seed faith to move mole hills rather than a mountains. Now when we encounter a true mountain we don't know what to do or how we can make it through the really tough situation.

It is time to get back to simplicity. It is time to stop making mountains out of mole hills. It is time to use the simple faith that God has given us and speak to the true mountains in our lives to be moved. It is time to realize that life really is simple.

What mountains do you need to speak to and what mole hills in your life do you need to stop turning into mountains. Take some time and think about it today. Take some time and realize truly how simple life is.

Thanks for listening.

We are all guilty of making mountains out of molehills. Especially when those molehills come at just the right time (when we are already frustrated, tired or overwhelmed). This blog is a good reminder again to put things in perspective. One of our life's missions is to keep things simple in our family. We have family members who do and those who don't and we can see and feel the difference when we are around them. Those that do, brush things off easily, arn't easily offended and rarely complain. They are refreshing to be around and we have decided that is something to strive for!
