I was reading a book to my daughters the other day called "Fancy Nancy". The story is about a young girl who is on a field trip to an Art Gallery and she is dressed up really fancy because she wants to look really good on her field trip.
On the trip they stop at a park to have lunch and one of the girls with her is not feeling well so she gives Nancy her lunch so Nancy eats her lunch too. Shortly after this as they are ridding in the bus and now Nancy gets sick and they have to pull over. When they do Nancy vomits all of her lunch and most of it ends up on her cloths. She is now upset because she does not look fancy anymore and well she probably smells too but I didn't try sniffing the book.
When they finally arrive at their destination the teacher quickly calls Nancy over and a takes her to a place where she can change. When Nancy comes out of the changing room she is wearing the teachers fancy sweater. When all the other students look they are all very happy for Nancy and a bit jealous because they do not have the teachers fancy sweater to wear.
As I read this story to my kids I realized that the modern day church tends to be alot like Fancy Nancy. The church will get all dressed up and put on its best outer wear as they journey to The Destination. The church will stop along the way and consume way too much stuff that does not belong to them or belong in the church and eventually making it sick. This inevitably does not stain any one's garments but the churches and makes them stink to all of those looking on just like Fancy Nancy.
What lessons can we learn from this? Well there are actually quit a few. First off stop trying to make yourself look so fancy on the outside and worry more about what is going on on the inside. Secondly stop consuming all the junk that doesn't belong in the church because your just going to get sick.
The good news is that The Teacher, Jesus will be there to take our gross smelly garments off and give us His beautiful garment and everyone will look on with excitement and anticipation of receiving their own.
Thanks for listening
