Bible Reading - Deuteronomy 5, Psalm 88, Isaiah 33, Revelation 3
Remember
Yesterday was a day to remember all those who have given their lives and those that are continuing to give their lives for the freedom of the USA. Yesterday I took some time to reflect on what the day meant before spending time relaxing and hanging out with friends. If we do not take time to truly reflect on holidays like this we can quickly forget what the holiday represents and just view it as a 3 day weekend of fun and partying. People begin to look towards a 3 day weekend rather than a time of reflection on people who have given their lives for our freedom.
This mentality however does not just effect the larger population on holidays such as Memorial Day, but it effects us as believers everyday we live life as a Christian. We as Christ followers can so quickly forget where our hope, strength, favor and ability comes from. When we forget to remember we live our lives as if we were in control and that everything in our lives has happened because of our ability and strength. We quickly forget that someone (Jesus) has given His life for our freedom. We forget that it is God who has brought us out of sin and who it is we are to live for. We in essence become the god of our lives when He really is and therefor we must remember HIM.
Deuteronomy 5 was not only a great reminder of this principle for Israel but is a great reminder for us today as well. Deuteronomy 5:6-7, "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me". This passage does not only state who He is but reminds Israel what He did for them. He reminds them of what He did to jog there memory. He wanted them to remember so that they would turn back to Him and stop serving themselves and other idols.
This speaks to us today because although none of us were in slavery in Egypt, all of us know what it is to be in bondage to something. God wants us to remember today that not only is He God but He is the one who brought us out of bondage, that pain and that life that was hopeless. He is the one that brought you and is continuing to bring you to a place of great fulfillment. He reminds us of this today because like the children of Israel and the people who partied all Memorial weekend we so easily forget and in forgetting we begin to establish different reasons for our success (idols). It is because of this that It says in verse 7, You shall have no other God's before me".
Everyday we need to take time to remember That the Lord is God and the He is the one who has brought us out of bondage and is the one who is bringing us to a place of great fulfillment. We need to remember that it is Him and Him alone and we cannot have any other God's before us. We need to remember and tear down the god's of relationships, self, money, popularity etc.
He and He alone is the one who saved us and is prospering us. Let's remember Him today and give Him praise.
