Whether confident or trembling... Daily Devotional - May 10, 2010

Bible reading - Numbers 19, Psalm 56-57, Isaiah 8, James 2

We see throughout the Bible that God did not always call the most qualified people. The Lord called the orphan, Esther to become Queen of the nation. He called the rough-around-the-edges fishermen to become his disciples. He chose David, the ruddy little shepherd boy to become King. He called Moses, the man with a studder, to lead a nation.

The world chooses people based on education, gifting, looks, work-experience, or association. God does not call the equipped but He equips the called. The one barrier that stands in the way of grasping hold of our God-given purpose, is exposing the lie that we are not qualified. When Moses was called by the Lord, he responded:

Exodus 4:10 "O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue."

Moses took it upon himself to remind God of the reason he was disqualified for this task. Does that sound familiar to anyone else? God calls us to do something and our first response is to remind him of our inadequacies. We try to convince God that He surely chose the wrong person.

Isaiah 8:11-13 “The Lord has given me a strong warning not to think like everyone else does. He said, “Don’t call everything a conspiracy, like they do, and don’t live in dread of what frightens them. Make the Lord of Heaven’s Armies holy in your life. He is the one you should fear. He is the one who should make you tremble.”

This passage reminds us to live for an audience of one. We are not called to fear what the world fears, the greater fear we should have is a fear of the Lord. Our fear of not fulfilling our destiny should be a greater fear than our own inadequacy.

Rick Warren says, “Don't wait to feel powerful or confident. Move ahead in your weakness, doing the right thing in spite of your fears and feelings.”

I have realized that I don’t have time to question my qualifications anymore. The enemy would love for us all to dwell on the reasons we can’t do it. We do not have enough education, we are not as talented as others, we lack the finances, we don’t have the right connections, we are too young, too old…the list goes on. The enemy knows the longer he can get us to focus on what we don’t have the longer he can keep us from what we could have. If God chose you, that is the only qualification you need to fulfill your God-given dream.

Move forward anyway! Stop wasting time focusing on your shortcomings. God has a purpose for you to fulfill and whether confident or trembling, there is only one option: Leap!
