The Tent Pitched Over You.

In Psalm 61:4 David wrote “I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.” Through the book of Numbers we have been reading about the presence of the tabernacle (which was a tent) in the midst of Israel and the way God showed his presence there in the cloud/fire and by speaking to the Israelites through Moses and Aaron.

This is what David is referring to. He wanted to dwell in the presence of the Lord; the presence represented by the tent. To “take refuge in the shelter of your wings” refers to the protective outreach of God’s power, as in Psa. 91:4. “He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge.” I think it also refers to the wings on the cherubim over the ark of the covenant in the Most Holy Place. Ex. 37:9. This is where God revealed his presence. David was saying that he wanted to live in the presence of the Lord. What an awesome desire.

Paul said in 2 Cor. 12:9 that he desired the power of Christ to rest on him. The word “rest” comes from the root word “to tent upon.” Basically Paul was saying the same thing as David. Paul wanted the power of Christ to pitch a tent over him; David wanted to dwell in God’s tent.

When David penned the words in Psalm 61 he was experiencing a difficult time. He talks about his heart growing faint and needing a refuge and a strong tower. Paul said that he was experiencing weakness, but when he was weak he was strong because that is when the power of Christ was tenting over him.

We need to realize our frailties and that God wants to pitch his tent over us. We need to sense our need of his presence in our lives and seek for his presence to become a reality. David said he wanted to dwell in God’s tent. That implies permanence. Not just running to God when we have a specific need but to have a constant, abiding sense of the presence of God in our lives, to live in his presence.

Is the tent pitched over you?
