Bible Reading - Leviticus 14, Psalm 17, Proverbs 28, 2 Thessalonians 2
Change the Dirty Diaper
Proverbs 28:13 says "Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy." As I read this I thought of my diaper changing days. Thankfully my girls are well past those days now, but when they were babies we had many opportunities to change dirty, stinky diapers.
How does changing a dirty diaper relate to this passage of scripture? Imagine for a moment if I decided I did not want to change my daughter's diaper, instead I just cover the dirty diaper with a clean one. By not removing the dirty diaper and just covering it with a clean one I am attempting to conceal the nastiness inside. The smell may be concealed for a moment, however as time goes on eventually the stench of the nastiness will permeate through.
According to dictionary.com a transgression is a violation of law, command; sin. So this passage of scripture is saying that if we attempt to conceal sin in our lives we will not prosper, it is as though we are just putting a clean diaper over a dirty one. We can try to hide it but eventually it will get the best of us.
If we stop trying to cover our sin, admit that it is there and choose to get it out of our lives we will find mercy. It is time to stop concealing, identify the sin and get it out today. Change the dirty diaper and dispose of it!
