The Source

A few weeks ago I got a phone call from my mom telling me that my grandmother has been diagnosed with breast cancer. It hit me pretty hard as my mom has also battled breast cancer so I know what she is facing. Just when we thought the news was getting better and that they had gotten it out in surgery the doctors discovered that they did not in fact get it all out. She is now faced with having to make some difficult decisions.

It is news like this that cause us to turn to someone or something for comfort. I know for me I often find myself going to my husband, my best friend to share my heartache and frustrations. Where do you run when things go wrong, when you have a bad day at work or when you hear bad news. Maybe for you it is to a co-worker, parent or best friend. We go to these people because we need someone to listen and be that shoulder to cry on, we need them to comfort us in times that are tough.

In 2 Corinthians 1:3 we read, "... God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort." I am so grateful for this scripture. It does not say God is the source of some comfort but of ALL comfort. The passage continues on in verse 4 telling us, "He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us." Not only is He the source of ALL comfort, He is the one that comforts us in ALL our troubles. Whether it is relational, financial or physical troubles He is the source of comfort. It is with the comfort that He has given us that we are able to comfort those around us.

I don't know what you are going through today, what challenges face you or what bad news you may have heard but I do know the One who can bring you comfort. Before you turn to your parent or friend look to your Heavenly Father today and you will be comforted in all your troubles. As you are comforted look to see who you can comfort with the comfort you have received.
