Daily Bible Reading - Exodus 1, Luke 4, Job 18, 1 Corinthians 5
What's The Big Deal?
Have you ever found yourself in a situation that you probably should not be in or did something you knew you probably should not have done, then made the comment "it was just one time, it is not that big of a deal". Or, maybe you have never done that but you have observed someone do something and you challenged them in it and their response was, "what's the big deal?"
If we all take a moment and look back I am sure we can find something in our lives that we are writing off as no big deal. 1 Corinthians 5:6b says, "Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?" Although this scripture is in reference to some specific things that were taking place in Corinth the principles of God's word can be applied to every area of life. Leaven is a substance that is put into dough that makes it firm and expand. The warning is simply this, that it only takes very little leaven to effect the whole lump of dough so be careful what kind of leaven you put in (good or bad) and in this case do not allow any leaven in at all.
You see, the big deal is that one little wrong action or thought or interaction with someone if left unchecked can effect your whole life. There is an old saying that says, "sow a thought reap an action, sow an action reap a habit, sow a habit reap a destiny". As you trace this statement back to the beginning you see that the destiny all started with a thought. For those of us that proclaim to be Christ followers we need to be very aware of this leaven warning and take it to heart. We need to do this because if we live in even the slightest compromise it could effect someones view of what a Christ follower is and in turn effect someones view of Christ.
Next time you are or someone you know is doing something that they probably shouldn't be doing, do not write it off as no big deal but rather take some time and remember 1 Corinthians 5:6b.
