You better watch out...

The Christmas season is here and children around the world are eager for Christmas day to arrive. This eagerness and excitement can quickly turn to impatience and pouting. So parents everywhere are repeating the words to thus much loved song...

Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
You better watch out
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town
He's making a list
And checking it twice;
Gonna find out Who's naughty and nice
Santa Claus is coming to town
He sees you when you're sleeping
He knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake!
O! You better watch out!
You better not cry
Better not pout
I'm telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town
Santa Claus is coming to town

Children everywhere hear this song and begin to think of the joy to come on Christmas morning. It reminds them to be good because someone is watching them and sees their every move. They are encouraged to be good so that their name will be found on the good list. Kids are reminded that rewards come to those who are good. Many parents experience instant obedience simply by repeating these lyrics therefore wishing that this song could be sung all year long!

I could not help but think of this as I read 1 Peter 1:13-22 today. These verses are much like this much loved song. We are reminded to exercise self-control and to keep from slipping back into our old ways of living. We are told that we will be judged or rewarded for every action and reminded to love one another deeply. These verses are like God's song to us. Imagine God, like the many parents around the world, repeating the verses in your ear each time you are tempted to have a bad attitude or to go in the wrong direction. I know that if I were to be reminded of these words in my moments of temptation I would certainly make the right choice.

Psalm 119:11 says "Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You". As we commit the Word of God to memory, hiding it in our hearts, we will find it easier to live holy and to love each other as brothers and sisters. We have the King of kings and Lord of lords watching our every move. Psalm 139:2-4 also tells us that He knows all our thoughts. Luke 10:20b reminds us to "...rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven". There is a list in heaven and each of us wants our name to be found on that list!

You better watch out, there is someone watching you today. He is ready to reward you for every thought and action. Let the words found in 1 Peter 1 run through your mind, encouraging you to do what is right today.

Talk about putting the fear of God in you! This is so true but I think sometimes we allow God to become so common to us that we do not pay any attention to the fact that he really can see everything.
