Daily Bible Reading - 2 Chronicles 7, Ezekiel 42, John 8
Who's Your Daddy (John 8)
In John 8 Jesus has a heated discussion with some Jews about who their father is. These Jews insist that God is their father, yet Jesus tells them just the opposite. In verse 44 He says, "You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies". This is a pretty bold statement, how could Jesus say this of them, what was it that caused Him to come to this conclusion?
"But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. Which one of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me? Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God." John 8:45-47
Jesus knew who their father was because they could not hear the words of God. Later in the book of John Jesus says, "But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me" John 10:26-27. Sheep know the voice of their shepherd and follow according to what they hear. If God is our daddy then we hear His words and follow them. It is simple actually. If we are unable to hear the words of God and do them then we are not His kids. If we are not His kids then we have another daddy and that daddy is the father of lies.
So, who is your daddy? Verse 38 says "I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father." This is the test, what are you speaking? What are you doing? If you speak of what you have seen with your heavenly Father then you are His child, you are a follower of Christ. If you are doing things contrary to the Word of God then you have another father. If this is true then simply humble yourself and allow the grace of God to come upon you, "...so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life" Titus 3:7. In a moment you can be justified and become an heir, a child of God.
I know who my daddy is and I plan on living with him for eternity, how about you?
