We're just playing for fun, right?

Last night the Urban Church Basketball team had another game. We were 1-4 going into the game against a team that is 5-0. They are the number one team and by now I am sure we are at the bottom of the league so we did not have to much to worry about. At half time we were down by 25 but we slowly chipped away at the score and ended up only losing by 11. The thing that is so frustrating is that we are a much better team then our record shows and we have lost to a couple of buzzer beaters but now that our record is 1-5 I still feel like... well a loser.

During the second half I was catching a breather sitting on the bench. Our team through the ball away again. In frustration I dropped my head and then proceeded to yell at our guys and tell them to get it together. The ref looked at me, smiled and said, "hey we're just playing for fun right?" I thought for half a second and said, "well it's truly only fun when your winning, so who really plays just for fun?" He agreed with me and we continued our game.

I have been thinking about those words all night and this morning as I read through my Bible reading plan. I struggle to find the right topic or great little nugget of truth to share with the world, those words make even more sense to me this morning. There are so many great things in all of the scriptures this morning that I could pull something from all three of them. This morning though the question is WHY?

Why do I read my Bible?

You see if we go back to the basketball game and then look at the last time we even touched a ball before the game it just happens to be exactly one week earlier at our last game. None of us are practicing throughout the week and none of us are even going to a gym to play a pick up game or two. We just show up every Monday night and get on the court run up and down and throw the ball at the hoop and if we play a crappy enough team we win. So far 5 times out of 6 we have walked away with a loss, frustrated and not having had fun. If we want to have fun we need to start wining if we want to win we need to start practicing.

The reason I read the Bible everyday is not just so I can try and find some deep truth to share with the world and it's not just because I am a pastor. The reason I read the Bible every day is because I want to have fun in life and just like in basketball the only way it's truly fun is when your wining. We all have little battles we face everyday. Whether it is a financial difficulty or a fight with someone we love or maybe something more sever we need to be prepared as we come up against our opponent. Sure there are times when the situation might not be too hard to face so you end up getting a W but 5 times out of 6 if you have not been spending time in the Bible and with God you will walk away with a loss, frustrated and not having had fun.

So although there are many things I could have written about today I think you should go back through, re-read the scriptures and write your own devotional or thoughts and then share them here with us. The reality is we all are playing to win because when we win we are truly having fun. I look forward to your thoughts on these verses.

This makes a lot of sense. When we are practicing throughout the day we are prepared for the small battles that come our way and equipped with tools to fight. Recently someone prophesied over me that "fire is coming, but don't worry God is in it" For the longest time afterwords I was scared of what was coming. A job loss? A death in the family? My mind was going crazy. But i realize have nothing to worry about if I am prepared and practicing throughout the week, I will be able to respond and be victorious through that battle.
