Daily Bible Reading – 2 Kings 18, Ezekiel 8, Luke 4
Mere words…
The Bible says in Matthew 4:4, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God”. This statement is so powerful because if we understand this we understand that God’s word will sustain us, protect us and propel us to do greater things than we ever imagined.
In Luke 4, one of the other synoptic gospels, Luke relates from his point of view the temptation of Jesus Christ. It says in verses 1-3 that Jesus had gone 40 days without eating food and that the devil came to tempt him. Here is Jesus at the weakest moment physically in his life and that is when the Devil comes. As we read through this passage we see that the way Jesus resisted temptation and defeated the devil was with WORDS. Every time the devil came at Jesus, Jesus would quote an Old Testament scripture or fight back with words. Not just any words, but God’s Word.
This is such a powerful tool for us to understand today. You see the same way the devil came to tempt Jesus is the same way he will come and tempt us and distract us. We need to do like Jesus and not fight with our own strength but fight with God’s strength by using the Word of God. Psalm 119:11 says, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you”. What is that, it is using the word of God to fight and resist temptation. This is how Jesus fought and this is how you and I are to fight.
In the Old Testament King Hezekiah was a great king and was obedient to all that God told him to do, because of this God honored him and gave him favor. King Hezekiah would inquire of the Lord and when the Lord spoke King Hezekiah would do. King Hezekiah was fighting with The Word of God. When the King of Assyria heard this he challenged King Hezekiah in 2 Kings 18:20 and said, “Do you think that mere words are strategy and power of war?” When the King of Assyria said this he was not just challenging King Hezekiah but he was challenging the King of the Universe, because King Hezekiah was not living by his words but by God’s. Because King Hezekiah fought not with his own strength but with The Word of God we see that in 2 Kings 19:35 that “the angel of the Lord went out and struck down…185,000 Assyrians.
As you think about your life and your situations today, know that you do not have to fight alone but as you rely on God and His Word you will come out victorious. Put your trust in Him today and watch and see what He will do.

I think it was in hearing your story of casting out a demon at a youth conference that I first had the revelation of the power of the word of God. If i recall it was when you started reading from Psalms that the demon was truly disturbed. It amazes me how much power there is in HIS words!!!
