Daily Bible Reading Plan - 2 Samuel 4-5, Jeremiah 10, Matthew 21
Stupid is as stupid does (Jeremiah 10:20-21)
If you have ever seen the movie, "Forrest Gump" you probably remember the line, "Stupid is as stupid does". Ever since I have heard that phrase I always wondered what that meant. Well today, as I was reading I think I finally figured it out and here is the conclusion. You can tell if a person is stupid if they are doing stupid things or if they are not doing wise things. (I know brilliant huh?)
The Bible says in Proverbs 11:30, "...he who wins souls is wise". In other words he who builds God's kingdom is not stupid but a pretty smart person. Here, in the passage we are looking at today, we see that there is a group of people called stupid and as we examine it we see why they are called stupid. So let's take the stupid test together.
In Jeremiah 10:20-21 there are three distinct reasons that I see as to why the shephers are called stupid. As we look at these three things think about your life and ask yourself how you are doing in each of these areas.
1) It says in vs. 20, "my tent is destroyed; and all my cords are broken...there is no one to spread my tent again". This is speaking of the House of God or the church as a body. He is saying that people have neglected building my purpose and my plan and not only is it broken but there is not one left to reestablish it. In Matthew 6:33 we understand that if we seek first His kingdom or if we build first His house then everything we need will be given unto us. How are you doing in this area, are you building His kingdom? Is church a priority to you? If not than maybe you are...
2) The next thing we see is that the people are not inquiring of the Lord (see previous devotionals) for their instruction and wisdom. This speaks to me of daily reading The Word of God and taking time to converse with Him through prayer. Psalm 37:4 says you will inherit the earth as you wait on Him. WOW!! How about you, are you being diligent and taking time to read the Bible daily and allowing it to speak into your life? Do you take time to converse with God through prayer and see how His wisdom will instruct you? If not then maybe you are...
3) Lastly we see that it says in vs 21, ..."they have not prospered". It says in Psalm 37:25 that if you are in right standing with God you will never have to worry about provsions but He will take care of you. Are you prospering today? Are your needs being met and is God in control of your finances? Are you being wise with your money and not over extending yourself? Do you have a budget in place and are you sticking to it? If not you might be...
Examine these things today in your life, are you putting God's house first, are you spending time in The Word and praying and are you prospering? It is time to get back to wisdom and putting God first and building His kingdom! And remember, "stupid is as stupid does".
