Daily Bible Reading Plan - 2 Samuel 8-9, Jeremiah 13, Matthew 24
From Pauper to Prince (2 Samuel 9)
In 1 Peter 2:9 it says, we are a "royal priesthood". I love this statement that the Bible makes about us especially when you look at it in the context of when it was said. This epistle was written to the Jews who were scattered abroad. They felt disconnected, unsatisfied and like they had no purpose or place. In that moment Peter tells them how God feels about them, they are royal.
This is the exact picture of what is taking place in 2 Samuel 9. David now the king of Israel is wanting to show honor to the house of Jonathan who was the heir to the throne of his father Saul. As David puts out a search for any descendants of Jonathan it is discovered that there is one, Mephibosheth. Mephibosheth who's name actually means shame was crippled in his feet since birth. They find him living like a pauper on the out skirts of the the land. Although he is a pauper with one word from king David he was living in the palace as a prince.
2 Samuel 9:10b says, "...Mephibosheth your masters grandson shall always eat at my table". Then it states again in 2 Samuel 9:13, "so Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, for he ate always at the king's table. Now he was lame in both his feet." Mephibosheth was living as a pauper and he was crippled on top of it. When brought into the kings palace he was like one of the sons or a prince. Not only that but look at how many times it mentions he sat at the kings table. This is so important for us to see because once Mephibosheth was sitting at the table you could no longer see that he was crippled.
This is such a powerful story that really shows not the heart of David but of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is calling us from being scattered to come in and be royalty. He wants to take you from living like a pauper to living as one of His sons, a prince in the palace. He invites us in to sit at the table with Him and as we go and sit at His table all our shame and all the things that have crippled us are covered by His grace and mercy.
It is time to stop living like paupers and hear Him call you into the palace and begin to live as a prince or a princess in His Grace. Take a moment today and surrender your shame and sin to Him and live as He always intended for you to live.
Thanks For listening.

Haha I have never read the word pooper or a variation of it so many times in a blog, but point made! I think that most people don’t even know they are not supposed to be living like poppers, I think Mephibosheth thought that was it for him, and David did his job as a man after God’s own heart. He helped Mephibosheth out of his popper (wordly) life, and moved him into his royal (in relationship with God) Life. We are to be like David with all the Mephibosheths.
